Mobile-phone carrier MetroPCS yesterday announced that it was adding the option of streaming music through Rhapsody Unlimited Music to its bundled plans for Android-powered smart phones. The plan will cost $60 and include unlimited access 12 million Rhapsody tracks in addition to unlimited voice, messaging, and Web access. It’s available immediately to MetroPCS subscribers who have Android smart phones, which is about 20 percent of the company’s 9.1 million subscribers.
Customers who purchase the plan must download the Rhapsody app from the Android Market or the @metropcs App Store, and then enter an e-mail address and a password to begin listening. Rhapsody plans typically cost $10 per month for unlimited streaming on one mobile device or MP3 player and $15 per month for streaming on three mobile devices or MP3 players. MetroPCS already offers messaging, text, and Web access for $50 a month, but a MetroPCS spokesperson told tech blog AllThingsD that the biggest advantage of the new plan is that it doesn’t include a cap on multimedia streaming for 4G customers. It also streamlines both charges onto the same cell phone bill and adds a few perks, including visual voice mail, which texts your voicemail messages to you so you can read them.
The deal does have one major caveat, according to The New York Times: Warner Music Group, which has the rights to songs by Green Day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Linkin Park, among others, has not signed off to license its music to the service, so users who buy the plan won’t have access to those artists. A Warner spokesperson would not comment on the negotiations.
MetroPCS, the nation’s fifth-largest service provider, is not the first company to add unlimited music streaming to a cell-phone plan. Smaller competitor Cricket launched its Muve Music plan in January, and since then has attracted more than 100,000 subscribers. The Muve Music plan costs $55 for unlimited music, voice, text, and Web access.
It’s currently available only on a Samsung Suede phone with stripped-down capabilities, but Cricket plans to expand the service to Android phones in the fall. MetroPCS said its internal research showed high interest in a subscription music plan, and that many smart phone users were already listening to streaming music through services like Pandora.
