Hello this is my first time on here and my first DSLR camera. The problem is two fold when I take pictures I seem to be getting more of the sky than of the image I see though the view finder like what I see in the view finder is not what the picture shows. If I take a picture of some body I get a lot of above the head image and not what is see though the view finder. Also some times the camera locks up and I have to switch it off and back on again. You have a 95% coverage viewfinder so the picture you capture will be slightly larger than what you see in the viewfinder. But from your description it seems things are much worse. This is not normal.

The first symptom could mean that the SteadyShot mechanism of the camera is broken. If you want to check this, remove the lens and put the camera into sensor cleaning mode (it's one of the menu options), which opens the shutter so the sensor can be seen. Look carefully at the sensor. It is normally centered exactly in the shutter frame at the back of the camera, but if yours is lower than the frame with a gap at the top, the SS mechanism is broken. Another possible explanation is that the reflex mirror or some other part of the viewing system is out of alignment. The second symptom could be caused by any number of issues. Repair of these issues would be cost-prohibitive for the A290.

At today's prices, you would be wise to just buy another camera. It's difficult to know what your problem is, especially without a sample picture about which you can tell us exactly what you did and did not see in the viewfinder. But my guesses: (1) The Steady Shot sensor-shift image stabilization system may, as others suggested, be the problem. If it froze up with the sensor shifted all the way toward the bottom of the camera (IIRC, the lens projects the image upside-down), then that would tend to show too much above the main subject.

However, I really doubt that Steady Shot moves the sensor far enough distances to cause the major problem you describe. If it did, then lens coverage could well be a problem with DT lenses like the Sony 18-70mm and 18-55mm kit lenses. (2) If there really is a major alignment problem, I think it more likely that (a) the camera's moving mirror and/or (b) the viewfinder's pentamirror, or a part of it, is mis-aligned. Are there any signs that the camera was dropped or hit, especially over the viewfinder? (3) You did not tell us whether you only get too much of the sky, or also too much on the lower side. The inexpensive viewfinders on these cameras don't show you nearly all of the image area. Normally you will get a significant amount of extra included on all sides.
