I have a WD Elements external drive. When plugged into my USB i get a popup to install the drivers. At the end I get a message 'Cannot find the drivers, driver is not installed' Error code 28 In the Device manager I see a yellow!

Near the Elements 1078. I tried to update the drivers (manualy and automatic). I tried several cables and several USB ports with no result. I have Vista 64 When plugged into my Asus win 8.1 tablet there is no problem. There it detects the Elements 1078. So it's looks a Vista problem.

Hello Boogieman, My problem is solved. A microsoft employee advised me to download and install the CheckSUR tool and afterwards to do a sfc /scannow action.

Afterwards I booted the PC and connected WD Elements to the front USB. However, the problem persists. Also attempted to install the drivers through driver update which also failed. Finally, I used the USB port from the scanner and believe it or not, the drivers were installed and the WD Elements was as O drive visible in Explorer. After this, I restarted the PC and WD Elements remained visible. Afterwards it removed it from the USB scanner and reconnected the scanner.

It works as it should. I plugged the WD Elements into the front USB and it remains visible in Explorer, even after startup. Basically my problem is solved. In similar problems, it is therefore important to try ALL USB ports.
